JOB TITLE: Volunteer Coordinator (~20 hours/week)

The Community Housing Coalition of Madison County (CHC) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Volunteer Coordinator to oversee and manage CHC’s volunteer programs, which are aimed at improving housing conditions and addressing community needs. The Volunteer Coordinator will ideally have a solid, positive reputation in the Madison County community, be able to work with a diverse group of people, and have a sincere desire to help strengthen our community by helping those that need it most. CHC operates under a shared leadership model and all team members have the opportunity to be self-directed, creative, and respected for the skills they bring to the team.

YOUR ROLE:  Participate as a key collaborator in a rewarding and community-based job that works to address the most urgent housing needs of Madison County residents. This position works closely with CHC team members as well as local organizations, colleges/universities, and community leaders to plan and lead volunteer-based repair projects. Our repair needs often include, but are not limited to, building stairs, ramps, roof repair, sharing knowledge of how to operate power tools, hand tools, etc.

This is a part-time non-remote position with occasional weekend work.  Compensation is $21.00-22.50/hr for 20-24 hours/week. Other benefits include:

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • Recruit, schedule and oversee volunteers, including empowering CHC clients to volunteer, in our office, and during home repair workdays. 
  • Work with families, vendors, and staff to plan logistics and execute volunteer home repair workdays
  • Lead and coordinate monthly Neighbors Helping Neighbors projects. These projects usually include working one Saturday per month, as well as several days during the week.
  • Coordinate additional volunteer projects as needed. 
  • Ensure appropriate documentation for volunteers
  • When appropriate, take photos of volunteers in action
  • Use project management software to closely document project status and collaborate with team
  • Co-lead coordination with volunteer groups for self-led NHN opportunities (Summer program/ Helene response).
  • Work closely with CHC’s program staff to collect feedback, evaluate and improve our volunteer programs.

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Good interpersonal skills to work independently, as well as with groups (specifically volunteers who may have limited skillset)
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to interface with and show compassion for those in need and help empower them to be a part of the solution
  • Experience volunteering in Madison County or elsewhere preferred
  • Experience recruiting and coordinating volunteers strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of common computer programs and social media apps preferred
  • Experience working with faith-based or other types of volunteer groups preferred
  • Experience giving direction and guidance in a formal or informal environment
  • Ability to give presentations and interact in group settings 
  • Ability to lead and supervise large groups of volunteers
  • Basic knowledge of home repairs and processes is desirable, but not required
  • Uses active listening skills to better understand the needs and wants of clients, volunteers, and community members
  • Have honesty, attention to detail, tact, good judgment, and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
  • Familiarity with Madison County culture and geography strongly desired
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted driver’s license
  • Hiring will be contingent upon review of a background check
